Coleman is a native of Blackpool Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl, and she received the highest marks for her A level examinations. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21, 2012 that Coleman was to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters left the show. Moffat decided to cast her in the role as she had the best chemistry with Smith. She also spoke more quickly than he does.
